Contrary to popular belief, tall ships
are not exclusively for giants and amazons. Folks tall and small experience the
thrill of sailing with today’s deal: $1999 for a 17-night South Pacific voyage
around the tropical islands of Tonga and Fiji including all meals aboard the magnificent Soren Larsen tallship ($4650 value).
Intrepid adventurers and tropical lounge lizards learn to tell port from starboard with a spectacular sailing voyage on board the magnificent Soren Larsen tall ship. Climb aboard in beautiful Vava’u in northern Tonga, aptly named by Captain Cook the ‘Friendly Isles’. Adapt to nautical life with a few fabulously relaxed days of gentle sailing by day and lying anchor in pristine sheltered coves by night. Enjoy snorkelling through atmospheric coastal caves and stunning coral gardens with crystalline water and up to 100 feet visibility. Find a quintessential deserted island beach and pile ashore for a balmy evening barbeque under the stars. Keep fingers crossed for a close encounter with one of the ocean’s greatest mammals, as the winter voyage coincides with the annual humpback whale migration that passes through Vava’u. Sailing souls find further delight with playful pods of dolphins regularly dancing alongside the ship and surfing the bow wave. After a few days exploring the untouched beaches, sculptured cliffs and local villages of Vava’u, embark upon a four-night blue water ocean passage where all aspiring captains and first mates have the opportunity to participate in night watches, have a turn at the helm, act as bow lookout, help trim sail, tack ship or even go aloft for brave boys and girls. No sailing activities are compulsory, however all guests are encouraged to get involved. Arrive in Fiji and soak up some history and old world charm in Overlau, the historic eastern capital. Continue via the southern islands of Mbegga and Kandavu, perhaps visiting traditional villages and a few more idyllic beaches, before arriving at the last stop, Lautoka in western Fiji. The Soren Larsen is a magnificent 145 foot, beautifully restored tall ship with gorgeous wooden finishes and glorious billowing sails. There is a small permanent crew of friendly, experienced sailors to guide guests through a beautiful South Pacific wonderland. Three full meals plus morning and afternoon tea are served daily, with the talented team able to cater for vegetarians and those with other special dietary requirements. The large comfortable saloon is furnished with many modern conveniences and fresh hot showers are available. All experience levels are welcome, with the voyage suitable for ages 16 to 85.
