In picturesque bushland on the far side of the Blue Mountains, explorers follow ancient underground river passages down into a magical world of glittering rock formations and deep, clear pools. The heritage-listed Jenolan Caves network is one of Australia’s most impressive, crowned with jewels such as the pure white, pink and apricot-coloured crystals of the Diamond Cave, and the intricate shawls of the Imperial Cave. The tunnels are alive with eerie, echoing drips that suggest the thousand-year old stalagmites and stalactites are still growing.

Groupon Recommends

One of the world’s finest and oldest cave systems, Jenolan features 11 show caves as well as adventure caving experiences for adrenaline junkies. The Nettle Cave, which Groupies tour as part of this deal, features massive stalactites and stalagmites plus wildlife including sooty owls, and is one of the only sites in the world where stromatolites or ‘craybacks’ grow. These enormous formations are up to 10,000 years old, and contain colonies of live cyano bacteria (blue-green algae) interacting with the crystal. Groupies grab a handset to enjoy audio commentary at their own pace, choosing from 11 languages including Klingon for Star Trek fans. After the tour, check out some of the other caves or walk along one of the trails wending through the tranquil surrounding bushland.

Local Amenities

Jenolan Caves is a three-hour drive from Sydney, and there is plenty of free parking on arrival. The road down into the caves is very steep and there is no petrol station onsite, so guests are advised to fuel up at Mount Victoria, Lithgow or Oberon. There is a café and gift shop at the caves, but it’s a good idea to bring snacks and any necessary personal items as facilities are limited and the nearest town is half an hour away. Groupies should also take plenty of warm, weatherproof clothing as it can get quite cold in winter.

Reviews

Jenolan Caves is really a magical place, and the old world charm of this historic hotel really made the trip. It was surprisingly quiet on a weeknight with relatively few guests. We had a nice dinner and a few drinks at the bar, then the manager stopped by and took 8 or 10 of us out after dark to see the kangaroos

Its a real treat to stay in a place that still operates after its heyday has well and truly gone but which still contains many traces of the first class place it used to be. We stayed here one night after going to the Valentines Opera in the Caves - after a great night spent listening to Arias in the Cathedral Cave, Caves House had the right ambience to continue our magical night.

A charming hotel built in the early 20th Century and well refurbished. We stayed in a classic room with its own ensuite. Everything was as expected and quite well done. The meals were delicious and whole ambience is cosy.
