Port Macquarie, QLD

As one of Australia’s original colonial settlements, Port Macquarie is steeped in history and relics of yesteryear. Now a holiday destination all year round, the town has hung onto its heritage alongside a growing number of resorts, restaurants and cafes. Long stretches of golden beach fringe the coastline for picture-perfect vistas that instantly put travellers into vacation-mode, while a bounty of wildlife encounters are sure to charm both local and global visitors alike.

Thanks to its colonial past Port Macquarie has a host of historic locations and activities to intrigue culture buffs, like the Timbertown Heritage Theme Park or Old Courthouse. For something completely different, travellers jump on the back of a camel for a safari along Lighthouse Beach. During rides peeps may even spot a whale or two frolicking in the waters, and can find even more chances to meet critters of all kinds at the Billabong Koala and Aussie Wildlife Park.

Even in the colder months the span of local beaches are well worth visiting for a stroll along the soft sand or romantic evening watching the sunset. By night, a mix of international restaurants and cafes offer a wide range of cuisine and several pubs and taverns keep the good times rolling long after.

Great location, across from beach, dual street access and secure parking for garden units. Great décor. Milk Bar café attached to resort is exceptional for breakfast. Rooms clean and have plenty of services. Staff friendly and informative. Indoor pool and spa great no matter what the weather.

My husband and I had a lovely romantic weekend at The Observatory. Great view of the palm trees and water. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Room was small but well appointed. The enclosed balcony with big louvre windows was fantastic for a winter stay.
