The Experience

East met West when in 2013 two Dutch volunteers and a Sri Lankan family decided to step forward and help make a change for elephant welfare in Sri Lanka. Together they formed the Elephant Freedom Project (EFP) where the elephants are free from riding, wood logging and abuse. There are only a few places in the world where domesticated elephants can enjoy a quality of life, where they don't have to work or walk with chains. Set in the centre of elephant country near Pinnawala and the city of Kegalla you’ll find the Elephant Freedom Project, a sanctuary where elephants can be elephants again.

At this sanctuary, the elephants enjoy walking the project grounds freely; they enjoy their surroundings, fresh food, enrichment games, their twice daily bathing in the nearby river and go on a guided walk through the surrounding rural areas with beautiful paddy fields and forest. And you can experience it with them at the unique Elephant Freedom Project.

At the project, located between lush green jungle and rice fields, volunteers participate in a variety of activities all aimed at caring for the elephants. Enjoy taking the elephants on their daily walk through the rural areas and small villages, wash them and experience them enjoying their swim. Volunteers help clean the elephant beds, help with the maintenance of the grounds and grow elephant food in the eco-garden.

Other optional activities include Sri Lankan cooking lessons, visits to the local temple, waterfall and bird sanctuary.

The Area: Sri Lanka

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean’, Sri Lanka offers travellers palm-studded beaches, rolling plantations and sacred sights steeped in spirituality. Lying off the southern tip of India, Sri Lanka also boasts charming people, mysterious ruins and some of the best cuisine in the world. Popular tourist activities include surfing, diving, deep sea fishing, yoga/meditation, trekking, water-skiing and wildlife safaris. Sri Lanka’s hypnotic essence will remain with you long after you come home.

My boyfriend and I were evaluating which elephant orphanage to visit. Even though this one has only two (adorable) elephants we decided to come here cause of its reviews. Tim started this venture because he found that elephants were treated badly and trained to be tourist attractions in the other places. Here elephants are left to be elephants like they should be. Support Tim and his project, support the elephants welfare. Put your money into good use, spend it here instead

I had a fantastic time working on the project. The family we stayed with were so welcoming and I was so sad to leave. We were very looked after. The experience opened my eyes to a new culture and has changed my view on a lot of things since my return. I would recommend this project to anyone. It feels amazing to have made a contribution that meant something and the people there work very hard on keeping the project going. I got to visit the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka and make memories of a lifetime. It's so hard to explain the experience as it touched my heart and will stay with me forever. You will get a great variety of things to do whilst there from working closely with the elephants to learning to cook Sri Lankan cuisine
