Groupon Go: Gotta Catch ‘Em All
If you’ve recently gone for a stroll through your neighbourhood and seen tens, if not hundreds, of people glued to their phone screens and wondered why, the answer is Pokémon Go. The augmented reality game app exploded onto the scene in July of this year and has since grown to have more active users than Twitter (and Tinder).
Essentially, the game involves players using their smartphones to find, catch, battle and train Pokémon. Incredibly, the Pokémon appear on the screen as if they were right in front of you.
PokéStops form an important part of the game. They’re places you can visit to collect important items like eggs and Pokéballs so you can catch even more Pokémon. You’ll find PokéStops at select landmarks near you, like parks, churches, gyms, monuments and art installations, but you have to get off your couch to get there.
Before you Go, it’s important to prepare yourself for so much outdoor action and know where to refuel near popular PokéStops. Follow these tips and you’ll be a Pokémon Master in no time.
1. Take your fitness from one to 100
Living in a world with myriad modern conveniences like buses and hoverboards means many people aren’t accustomed to walking long distances. If you’re someone who gets puffed out walking between the couch and the fridge, we recommend joining a gym to increase your fitness levels. Spend a couple of hours slogging it out on the treadmill and, before you know it, you’ll be catching Dragonites three suburbs over without even breaking a sweat.
2. Dress for success
The next stop on your Pokémon journey is an organised wardrobe. Not only is the game a great way to spend time outdoors, it is also the perfect excuse to buy a whole new outfit (which is this writer’s favourite kind of game). Feeling chilly walking around at night? Throw on a windbreaker. Planning on going Pokémon catching straight after work and don’t have time to change? Slip in some high heel insert protectors and you’re good to go. Worn through the soles of your sneakers? Grab a pair of sturdy Asics. And, finally, don’t forget a pair of bright tights to show everyone that you’re the very best, the best that there ever was.
3. Level up your electronic gadgets
What’s the point of doing all this excellent physical activity if there’s no proof of the health benefits? Strap on a Bluetooth activity tracker to count your steps, the distance covered and calories burned, and then congratulate yourself on your great new active lifestyle. The only thing worse than your phone freezing mid Pokéball throw is running out of battery. Avoid disaster by carrying a wireless phone charger around with you.
4. Make a meal out of it
It is important to keep your energy levels up while on the hunt for Pokémon. Luckily, many PokéStops are located near restaurants and cafés, allowing you to refuel quickly and easily. Tuck into a burger at Martin Place, indulge in French cuisine for lunch in Surry Hills or feast on a Moroccan breakfast down south in Wollongong. Check out more locations to combine your love of the game with your love of eating.
Now that you’re ready to catch ‘em all head to our Groupon Go shop to find the best deals near you.
