Three Steps To Winter-Proof Your Beauty Routine
Most of us aren’t the biggest fans of the cold weather when the harshness of winter starts to wreak havoc on our bodies. From dry skin, chapped lips and a halo of frizz, June through August can leave us looking anything less than angelic. To help, here are three steps to overhaul your beauty routine and keep you looking tip-top during the cooler months.
1. Save face
Our face is often the first place to show the ravages of winter, especially when curling up in a warm bed is more inviting than removing makeup correctly during the cooler months.
Try tackling redness and dryness with a gentle cleanser that restores smoothness and softness to the face, preventing that leather-type feel. And don’t forget SPF protection is still a must, especially in Australia’s unforgiving climate. Some sunscreens also double as a self-tanning product; after a few applications, rock a faux-holiday glow and wait for the compliments (and envious looks) to roll in.
Don’t forget your lips, which can crack and peel in protest whenever you leave the house. Keep lip balm in your pocket, preferably featuring ingredients like beeswax, shea butter and Vitamin E, and slather it on at regular intervals.
2. Turn down the heat
A hot shower is just like a hug, without having to awkwardly touch someone for an undisclosed number of seconds. If you’ve tried other ways of warming up without much success, ensure you at least follow your warm shower with a thick and nourishing body moisturiser and pay particular attention to elbows and knees, as well as the hands and feet, which are prone to peeling.
Before falling asleep for the night, pop on a pair of moisturising gel gloves and socks, rich in Vitamin E and jojoba oil to fight dryness. Skin stays smooth and soft, so your future as a hand and foot model is safe.
3. Fight the frizz
After wind, rain and the overuse of air-conditioning, hair becomes frazzled, frizzy and about as cooperative as a toddler in a toy store. One way to tame your tresses is with a keratin treatment at your local salon. This sulphate-free formula fights frizz and smooths unruly hair for several months, and helps to reduce the need for excessive styling at home.
Anyone who doesn’t care for diamonds knows that a straightener is a girl’s best friend, but this relationship can often do more harm than good. Try swapping your heat styling tool of choice to a straightening brush, which smooths hair from root to tip with a slow pulling motion and doesn’t cause as much damage as direct heat does.
It’s also a good idea to refrain from washing your hair more than necessary, because this strips away natural oils, and to be honest, is a chore no one likes completing. Get that freshly-washed feeling with a few spritzes of dry shampoo, arguably the best thing to ever come out of a can. The sweet-smelling formula also adds texture and body, turning limp styles from drab to fab in a matter of minutes.
This winter, adjusting the way you care for your skin and hair ensures you look your best, feel your best, and don’t need a body double. We have plenty of ways to pamper the body you do have. Go on, treat yourself!
