The Hotel: Cleveland Winery
Situated near the township of Lancefield, the four-star Cleveland Winery is set on 120 acres of farmland, including a large lake with a jetty. The accommodation at this rural retreat is spread across a modern guesthouse with 50 rooms and the private Historic Homestead.
Guests are free to explore the property, which is a working vineyard and home to rabbits, sheep, alpacas, Highland cattle and horses. The Area: Macedon Ranges
Mount Macedon looms over the Macedon Ranges, a region peppered with old stone buildings and idyllic rural townships. Only a 30-minute drive from Tullamarine Airport, the area has seen a huge amount of history and remains a favourite getaway for Melbournians. Home to indigenous Australians for some 26,000 years, the Macedon Ranges today are largely dedicated to farming and wine-growing. The Ranges enjoy comparatively cool temperatures year-round, making it an excellent area for outdoor pursuits. Visitors to the region have a wide range of activities to choose from, from walking trails and cycling to spa days and vineyard outings. Pay a visit to Mount Macedon itself, also known as Geboor, or the mysterious Hanging Rock, an ancient formation which served as a hiding place for bushrangers, a popular spot for day trips in the 19th century and the setting for the book and movie ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’.
