The Area: Canberra

Canberra is a planned metropolis that architect Walter Burley Griffin envisioned as a garden city for some 25,000 people. Canberra is currently home to about 300,000 people. However, due to the unique sprawled and decentralized design, the city maintains its small-town atmosphere.

As well as being home to some of the country's most significant monuments and museums, Canberra's unique attractions include the annual 'Celebration of Spring' flower festival Floriade, in which more than a million blooms go into the show. As well as the stunning exhibits, there are also horticultural workshops, music, local artistry, and events that include the spectacular Floriade NightFest. The stunning man-made lakes, hot air balloon displays, local wineries, fine dining, natural wildlife, and blossoming nightlife all contribute to Canberra's bush-city charm.

Not great. But mainly not expected, even for budget hotels I always prefer to write positive reviews, regardless of the hotels status. Obviously a budget hotel cannot be rated as 5 star as it's just not. But it can and should be advertised honestly and the photos on the Web should somewhat represent the room. Noting we are no strangers to budhet accommodation here is what I wish I knew before we went. Good location with a 15 minute drive getting us everywhere we wanted to go. The reception is open 24/7 but it never had anyone at the desk On arrival at about 12:30pm on Sunday, not a single person was to be seen. Empty bar, restaurant and reception. Multiple call outs of hello eventually brought someone out from the back room. I was served, barely, and he went back to whatever was more important. Later that evening when we returned at about 6pm we entered the building from the carpark through exterior doors desperately in need of painting, we passed mountains of linen laundry up stairs badly needing maintenance on the rails and calling out for a vacuum. Our room. The bed was nice and clean and comfy, the bathroom had been renovated, was clean and totally fine. The carpet did not appear to have be cleaned in quite a while. We couldn't get tv to work at all so I went down to reception. No choice, as no phones in the room. No staff ro be seen again, so I called out a few times. Decided to wait anyway. A staff member arrived from helping a guest. This staff member was a very helpful lady, and pleasant. We were offered a room across the corridor and moved our stuff. The TV worked fine. As I said, beds and bathrooms fine. It seems ro be maintenance and management that are on interesting standards. Furniture is old but no big deal. The rooms barely resemble those online though. There are no lamps or phones or clocks. The tea and coffee and cups would usually have saucers and sit on a little tray. Nope. These all sit on the bare timber inside a ground level cupboard. No major problem. It just seems to represent how every single cost has been stripped out. Most strangely is the cigarette smell that always seemed to be in the background and occasion got really strong, as if someone was smoking right outside the door. Didn't see anyone smoking though. Also be prepared for dogs barking from rooms just two doors away. Not all day or all night, but definitely every day and every night. Maybe there are permanent residents?? Small note that the TV's do not have any streaming services to login or the ability to stream from phones. None of these would be a problem if you knew before booking. But the description online and on the info you access from the QR codes in the rooms is very different. The restaurant is not open on the advertised days/nights The is no room service as advertised. There are not hundreds of movies on your TV as advertised. The rooms are not stylish or cleaned well. So on and so on. Its cheap. It's budget. It's all fine if you know what you are getting and are OK with that. It's not meant or expected to be 5 star. It's not OK that you buy one thing and get another. I cant say that we will be back Now we know what this hotel offers, our choice will be to pay a bit more, for something a bit better.

Just ok Stayed in family room, beds comfortable, housekeeping made them up daily. Carpets throughout the hotel are in need of ripping up. No crockery or cutlery supplied, 4 mugs and a small kettle only but no spoons etc… No foot mats provided for bathroom, difficult with children and wet tiles. Air con works well. Very noisey hotel, can hear everything from neighbours and people walking through corridors. It’s summer nats weekend so maybe louder than usual. Pool looked very cloudy and I couldn’t bring myself to swim in it. Didn’t eat at the hotel so can’t comment. Overall it’s okay if you’re looking for budget accommodation.
