The Hotel: Mercure Portsea and Portsea Golf Club

Perched on the edge of Port Phillip Bay next to an 18-hole championship golf course, Mercure Portsea and Portsea Golf Club invites holidaymakers to stay, dine, play, and celebrate in a tranquil coastal setting. Each of the resort’s 24 boutique-style rooms and suites offers guests views of the rolling fairways, sand dunes, and coastal vegetation lining the golf course, along with a private balcony or terrace on which they can soak up the lush green setting and enjoy the ocean breeze. During their visit, travellers can take advantage of the prime Mornington Peninsula location and explore local wineries, cellar-door restaurants, art galleries, beaches and nearby hot springs to ensure an unforgettable getaway.

Groupies kick back in their new digs, a Standard View Room featuring mod cons including an en suite bathroom, LCD TV with pay-per-view movies, and air conditioning. After catching up on beauty sleep in their king bed, guests rise each morning to a cooked a la carte breakfast to help them fuel up for the day.

Between exploring local tourist attractions and discovering the natural beauty of the Peninsula, Groupies can opt to get competitive on the 18-hole, par 71 golf course that adjoins the Point Nepean National Park. When hunger hits, players retreat to answer the call of their rumbling tummies at Spike Restaurant, which serves up breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, and offers panoramic views of Port Phillip Bay. The menu showcases local produce alongside a selection of local wines. With such a scenic backdrop, it’s no surprise that the venue regularly plays host to intimate romantic getaways as well as weddings and celebrations of all shapes and sizes.

The Area: Portsea, Victoria

A stretch of windswept beaches, sheer bluffs and wild bushland, the Mornington Peninsula was the site of Victoria’s first European settlement. With these early relics plus fortifications dating back to both World Wars, the area is alive with history and a strong sense of the past. Meanwhile, contemporary art galleries and stylish bars add a chic, modern edge, and the Mediterranean landscape is enhanced by silvery olive groves, vineyards and an emphasis on fresh produce.

A water-lovers playground, Portsea fronts both the calm waters of Port Phillip in the north and the rugged surf beaches along the Bass Strait to the south, meaning visitors can take a quiet dip or embark on a leisurely paddle in a sea kayak just as easily as they can get adrenalin pumping at a local surf break. Adventure seekers feel the sun on their back as they learn to scuba dive amongst the sea life at Portsea Pier, or slow the pace with a wander along the Sorrento-Portsea Artists Trail to see how the coastal views were depicted by some of Australia’s most famous artists. To get a sense of the area’s rich past, check out the labyrinth of nineteenth-century tunnels and fortifications in the Point Nepean National Park - built to guard Port Phillip heads - or visit the historic Quarantine Station.

Elsewhere on the Mornington Peninsula, hop from one winery to the next, sampling unique local drops and even indulging in a spot of lunch at one of the cellar door restaurants. Cheese factories and olive groves are also choice places to pick up an artisan product or two, while a long list of markets present wares like fresh produce, crafts and knick knacks for tourists. For a unique experience visit the Peninsula Hot Springs to bathe in the mineral-enriched warm waters.
