The Hotel: Overnewton Castle
Built in 1849, Overnewton Castle was once the extravagant family home of Scottish settler William Taylor. Set amid manicured Victorian-era gardens, the design of the bluestone Castle was inspired by Tudor architecture and features elements of English, Scottish and French building styles. A number of original elements survive, including the bathroom tiles, wood stove in the kitchen and several outbuildings.
Groupies stay in their choice of The Cottage or The Stables, enjoying chocolates and bottle of sparkling wine on arrival. The Cottage is a contemporary-style two-storey residence popular with bridal parties; it features a private balcony with views over the Maribyrnong Valley, spa and large dressing room area. The Stables is a loft-style dwelling featuring an open plan living area and full kitchen. Both accommodation options are set in outbuildings a short stroll from the main castle. The Cottage accommodates up to six people (adults or children) while the Stables accommodate up to ten.
When not enjoying the comforts of the room, guests can indulge in a traditional Devonshire High Tea within the castle. After sipping tea and snacking on scones, embark on a historical tour to learn more about its illustrious history, although you will hardly need an excuse to wander through the gardens.
