The Hotel: Portsea Village Resort

Portsea Village Resort invites visitors to the Mornington Peninsula with its boutique resort-style accommodation by the sea. Perched between the Bass Strait and Port Phillip Bay, guests enjoy access to a safe bay beach on one side and a surf beach on the other, with each offering a choice of water-based activities and adventures to suit fast or leisurely-paced getaways. A network of the nearby hiking and biking trails beckon budding explorers, and wildlife experiences allow visitors to get up close and personal to furry, fishy, and feathered locals.

A range of one, two and three bedroom apartments are designed to lend themselves to intimate escapes for couples, and family and group holidays alike. Natural light floods the open living area and adds an airy feel to complement any seaside stay. Sliding doors lead out to a private balcony offering a quiet space to take in sea and/or garden views. When not seeking out local attractions, guests take advantage of the in-room conveniences like Wi-Fi and a TV with DVD player and Foxtel channels.

Guests are invited to sample local produce, complemented by a selection of fine estate wines from the region at the on-site restaurant, open Fridays and Saturdays. After indulging, Groupies can work up a sweat in the gym or swim a few laps in the resort pool. Groupies start each morning of their stay with a continental breakfast, and can take their time on departure with 11am late check-out.

The Area: Portsea, Victoria

A stretch of windswept beaches, sheer bluffs, and wild bushland, the Mornington Peninsula was the site of aboriginal settlements and sacred sites for many thousands of years, as well as being Victoria’s first European settlement. With these early relics plus fortifications dating back to both World Wars, the area is alive with history and a strong sense of the past. Meanwhile, contemporary art galleries and stylish bars add a chic, modern edge, and the Mediterranean landscape is enhanced by silvery olive groves, vineyards, and an emphasis on fresh produce.

A water-lovers playground, Portsea fronts both the calm waters of Port Phillip in the north and the rugged surf beaches along the Bass Strait to the south, meaning visitors can take a quiet dip or embark on a leisurely paddle in a sea kayak just as easily as they can get adrenalin pumping at a local surf break. Adventure seekers feel the sun on their back as they learn to scuba dive amongst the sea life at Portsea Pier, or slow the pace with a wander along the Sorrento-Portsea Artists Trail to see how the coastal views were depicted by some of Australia’s most famous artists. To get a sense of the area’s rich past, check out the labyrinth of nineteenth-century tunnels and fortifications in the Point Nepean National Park - built to guard Port Phillip heads - or visit the historic Quarantine Station.

Elsewhere on the Mornington Peninsula, hop from one winery to the next, sampling unique local drops and even indulging in a spot of lunch at one of the cellar door restaurants. Cheese factories and olive groves are also choice places to pick up an artisan product or two, while a long list of markets present wares like fresh produce, crafts, and knick knacks for tourists. For a unique experience visit the Peninsula Hot Springs to bathe in the mineral-enriched warm waters.
