Cairns is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city nestled between the sea life of the Great Barrier Reef and the rolling downs of the Atherton Tablelands. As the gateway to the wet tropics, the city buzzes with a lively mix of travellers, from backpackers to luxury-seekers keen to soak up the sun. As night falls, the wide streets come alive with bars, galleries and seafood restaurants enticing diners by the waterside.

Take a luxurious day trip to Port Douglas, an hour’s drive north, to dine on succulent seafood and shop in fashion boutiques. Walk among the towering ancient trees and lush greenery of the World Heritage Daintree rainforest, keeping an eye out for brilliantly-coloured butterflies and rare tropical birds; or marvel at enormous prehistoric reptiles in one of the region’s crocodile parks.

Closer to home, take a stroll down the Esplanade to find countless dining options and interesting shops. By night the same stretch comes alive with the Night Markets, where clothes, trinkets and Australian keepsakes are all up for grabs. Solid, well located hotel. The hotel has obviously had a recent refurbishment. Personally I found the colours contemporary and attractive. The location makes walking to local restaurants and attractions a breeze. The breakfast buffet is not extensive but is well done. The bacon had been thoroughly cooked which is often not the case with hotel buffets. The food was replenished quite quickly. Not being huge fans of buffets we ate out for most of our 7 day stay but the days we ate the buffet we were pleased with it. Having a nespresso machine in the room is a big home run. So much better than instant coffee. And the coffee machine in the foyer was also a big bonus. The service attendant who cleaned our third floor room was brilliant. She had great attention to detail and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job. Impressive. All the staff were friendly and easy to deal with. My children and Grandchildren loved their family room. Not easy to find, which is why we chose this hotel. Pool is great as well. Recommended.

Comfortable, but.... While the hotel was well presented and rooms adequate in size and comfort the housekeeping was disappointing. One day there was no housekeeping, the mini bar was never restocked during my week stay and the dust behind the door was so thick, I actually thought the paint was missing until I went and looked closely. The tv continued to lose reception so was pointless trying to watch anything, the fire bell rang for 5 mins early one morning but when I went out, nobody else had evacuated and no loudspeaker announcement to advise what was happening and then to top it off, for several nights I had children running up and down the hallway late at night squealing.

Solid average accomodation The rooms are clean and the staff friendly enough but this was a disappointing stay for a Mecure. There are only 6 car spots and everyone else has to fend for themselves (including moving cars to avoid time penalties). The restaurant is basic, unable to cope with food allergies so we ate at the Novotel the majority of the time. Both the Novotel and Mecure accepted discount dining for Accor Plus but the Mecure really had no idea of the benefits for a Gold Accor member.

Such an amazing hotel with a lovely outside area We really appreciated and loved this type of architecture, the whole Queenslander type of look that so represents Far North Queensland. It's so refreshing especially being surrounded by so many large hotels. Our room still had all the modern, large comfy features that makes a great stay. It's positioned in a great spot for cafes and the esplanade too. The breakfast buffet and dinner had lots to choose from and was very tasty in such a lovely, relaxing setting overlooking the pool. All staff we encountered were only too happy to help in any way and tried very hard to make sure we had an exceptional stay. Thank you
