The Area: Newcastle, NSW

Rated as one of the top 10 places to travel in the world by Lonely Planet in 2011, Newcastle is often overlooked as a travel destination. But the area boasts a rich cultural history as Australia’s second-oldest town and a sunny beach scene to rival those of typical watery destinations, not to mention the vineyards of the Hunter Valley close by. Visit centuries-old buildings, sip on fine wine, and hit the golden sand, all in one day in this holiday hub, just two hours from Sydney.

Kick stays off with a trip to one of eight beaches, like Merewether, Newcastle, Nobbys, or Bar Beach for surfing or fishing fun, or have a paddle at the iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths. Swing by the Honeysuckle Precinct, where restaurants plating up dishes from around the world compete for attention. This is the place to gaze out at the harbour, listen to some live music, and sample cuisine with a modern twist. Later, move to Darby Street for a coffee or cocktail in trendy surrounds. Culture vultures find their fix amongst the mix of local and international art at the Newcastle Regional Art Gallery or instead go hunting for a piece to take home at any number of small galleries dotted around the city. Step back in time with a stroll through the Fort Scratchley Historic Site or Bogey Hole to see relics of Newcastle’s colonial past, while the Christ Church Cathedral is worth a visit for its imposing form and steadfast past.

Filthy Great location was the only thing good about this place! The linen on the beds & the towels were the only clean thing in the room. It was filthy dirty, only 1 light out of 6 worked, power point was hanging off the wall & too dangerous (probably didn’t work anyway) & it smelt of stale cigarettes! A dog had obviously urinated in the lift!! I understand that buildings & furnishings can be old but the dirty room was disgraceful !!

Eerie Post Apocalyptic nightmare This place is eerie. There is no staff, the restaurant, reception and conference facilities are boarded up. In the ‘Guest Services’ section of the app it proudly suggests the vending machine in the smelly, scary foyer. The amenities included a single bowl, two teaspoons and a coffee cup. I got hot water once in three days. Some of the clientele seem to be running businesses in there, which frankly made me feel unsafe at night, especially as it is a vacated building. You’re on your own if something goes wrong. Upside, location is great. So yeah, if you want to feel bad about yourself, and life in general have a couple of nights here. There’s also a drug trade going on in the alley below which was revolting.

Do not bother This place is disgusting. Dirty and not maintained at all. We had a tv that didn't work, broken tap in hand basin, mould in the shower. Was advertised as wheel chair acessable but is definatly NOT! Staff are unfriendly and unhelpful. When you have issues you have to call a number as there isn't anyone around to help and the person on the phone just argues with you and is not helpful at all

Hotel from HELL - Note to self: Read reviews before booking anywhere in future! No staff on site - just SMS'd codes to open front door and room. One lift (not working) - we were on the third floor. NO HOT WATER - we found out as we were leaving that a plumber had been out the previous day so they knew about this problem. Fire alarm at 3:30am - apparently about the 4th time this month - they get druggies smoking ice frequently. Our room was clean and bed was good. I rang the contact number asking for a refund, still waiting for the return call from the manager.
