The Hotel: Desert Gardens Hotel

Desert Gardens is part of the Voyages Ayers Rock Resort complex, only a short distance from Uluru. Facilities include the Bunya Bar, Arnguli Grill, swimming pool and the garden of ghost gums and flowering native shrubs that gives the hotel its name. The larger resort complex includes restaurants, shopping, pools and a supermarket for the convenience of travellers.

Guests stay in city comfort in this remote setting, with every Standard or Deluxe Room boasting air conditioning, furnished balcony or courtyard area, room service and movies on demand. Some Deluxe Rooms offer unbeatable clear views of Uluru itself from their balconies. The resort offers free daily activities including indigenous art markets, guided garden walks, dance workshops and spear and boomerang throwing lessons.

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park

The Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is jointly managed by Parks Australia and its traditional Anangu owners. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is dual-listed for its outstanding cultural and natural values. Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is the central attraction which draws tourists to this remote outback area. The iconic, red-hued rock formation looms 348 metres above the desert floor. For those with a little more time to explore, the taller Kata Tjuta formation, also known as The Olgas, lies 50km from Uluru.

There are a number of walking trails surrounding Uluru, ranging from easy to demanding. Visit the Cultural Centre within the park to learn about the traditional lore of the area. Maps are available to point out the best vantage points to watch the sun rise or set behind the rock. Ranger-led walking tours are also available. Highlights include ancient Indigenous artworks, native animals including wallabies and red kangaroos, and natural features including caves, springs and waterholes.

A decent value with a friendly staff. The definite pluses are the helpful and welcoming staff plus of course the beautiful surroundings of the Uluru Kata Tjuta region. The hotel is set amid a botanical desert garden which is itself a treat with the native plants identified and described.

The Desert Gardens hotel is a perfect place to experience this fabulous land. The rooms are located in small blocks of 4 with some deluxe rooms having a view of the rock. The facilities in the resort are amazing considering were you are. The rooms are very well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The staff are first class and very polite. The hotel restaurant was really good and the daily breakfasts were as good as any top hotel.
