The Hotel: Whale Watch Ocean Beach Resort
Whale Watch Ocean Beach Resort offers prime viewing and lookout potential with an unrivalled vantage point on Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island. Guests find themselves perched high above the white sands of the main beach, primed to take in the ocean vistas in the Premium Ocean Side apartments, or national park or garden views from the Standard Ocean Side units. Those fortunate enough to stay during the annual whale migration can catch a glimpse of the friendly giants from select spots in the resort.
Groupies can travel in duos or packs with the choice to stay in a one or three bedroom Oceanside apartment. Cool off in the heated pool or spa before heading inside to relax in the spacious, self-contained apartment-style accommodation. Cook up a storm in the kitchen or relax in the lounge area before dozing off in the comfort of an air-conditioned master bedroom. Crack open a bottle of complimentary wine to enjoy on the private balcony while watching the sun set beyond the horizon.
The Area: North Stradbroke Island, Queensland
North Stradbroke Island, affectionately known as ‘Straddie’, is the second largest sand island in the world, measuring at 38km long and 11km wide. It is accessible by ferry from Cleveland across Moreton Bay and has a permanent population of approximately 2,500 with three main townships in Dunwich, Amity Point and Point Lookout. North Stradbroke Island and South Stradbroke Islands used to be a single island but a huge storm severed the sand spit between the two in 1896.
Visitors may pay a visit to North Stradbroke Historical Museum; it is filled with tales of shipwrecks, harrowing voyages and an introduction to the Aboriginal history of the island. It also houses a collection of oddball artefacts including the skull of a sperm whale.
The island is also rich with sightseeing spots like Brown Lake, named after the tea-coloured water which was tinted by leaves from the surrounding forest. Take a refreshing swim or get a tan by the lake’s white-sand beach. Head to North Gorge Walk at Point Lookout and look out for turtles, dolphins or manta rays swimming in the sea below you. Admire at the sight of Whale Rock, where water sprays from the rock like a whale’s spout.

We stayed in a premium ocean view room for 3 nights on the 2nd level. The view was lovely, looking south down Main Beach. This resort is situated right next door to National Park so it was very quiet and a 5min walk to the local shops.

This was my second trip, the first with my family, we occupied all the rooms and even with the apartment full of people it was very spacious. The kitchen is very well equipped with all sorts of crockery, pots and utensils to cook up a storm, which we did every day.
