Image 1As the oldest continuous settlement in Western Australia, Albany is steeped in history and relics from the past. From the old whaling stations to war memorials and convict-built stone structures, the port city lets visitors step back in time to experience life as it was in the state’s early decades. Coupled with rugged natural scenery and a thriving café culture, Albany is a destination that all Perth-siders should experience at least once in their lives.

A boutique hotel with just 50 rooms, Ibis Styles Albany reflects the city’s old-world nature with its chesterfield-dotted lobby and opulent décor in rooms. Groupies are presented with a bottle of wine on arrival before unpacking belongings in a Deluxe King Room. Large beds are offset by rich textiles, while desks, internet and furnished balconies add both comfort and convenience.

Each morning guests sit down to breakfast with a smorgasbord of delights on offer. Cold options include fresh fruit, yoghurt, juice and bread along with eggs cooked to order, sausages, mushrooms and bacon. The hotel itself is framed with sculpted hedges and rounded trees, sitting in the centre of town and just a five-hour drive from Perth. Peeps indulge in a complimentary dessert in the hotel’s restaurant and enjoy a late 2pm checkout on the final day of one, two or three-night stays.

Groupon Recommends

Become acquainted with surroundings on an Albany Historic Town Trail, where legs get a casual workout while eyes see historical sites like the old Gaol and Stirling Terrace. Marvel at the jaws of a great white shark at the Residency Museum or step into the oldest dwelling in WA at Patrick Taylor Cottage Museum.

Whale World offers an intriguing look at Albany’s whaling past from its base in the old Cheynes Beach Whaling Station. Closed in 1978, the station is now home to exhibits, skeleton displays, movies and a former whaling ship.

Folks can step even further back in history with a visit to the Brig Amity Replica, the original of which brought Albany’s first settlers to the area in the 1820s. Bush and coastal scenery can be caught with a trip to West Cape Howe National Park or Mt Melville Lookout, while gourmands pick up fresh goods, breads and hams at the Farmers or Boatshed markets.

I would say the service from the receptionist played a big part in my stay there. She was helpful with giving us guidance and always has this pleasant smile. Of course the room was good as well. Will definitely stay there again.
