The Great Ocean Road traces a winding route along Victoria’s dramatic coastline, where sheer limestone cliffs are buffeted by rolling surf, and the Twelve Apostles rise like colossal statues out of the sea. At the western end of the stretch is the regional centre of Warrnambool, a city steeped in history thanks to the gold rush of the mid-1800s. Here, seaside sights mix with a dose of heritage and laidback vibes for holidays where travellers can explore at their own pace.



Warrnambool makes for a convenient base to explore the Great Ocean Road, from the Twelve Apostles to London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge. Hop in the car and follow the path east or west for unique coastal scenery that gives way to densely-wooded forest. The Grampians National Park, Cape Otway and Bay of Islands National Park are all worth visiting for those who enjoy a hike, while lavender farms, cheese factories and even whiskey distilleries provide something for every kind of holidaymaker.

Closer to home, head to Hopkins Falls just a few minutes from Warrnambool to snap a photo with the wide waterfall. Then pay a visit to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum to learn about the shipwreck trail and the area’s maritime heritage. At certain times of the year southern right whales can be seen from Logans Beach frolicking in the water, but even if there are no whales to be seen travellers will still enjoy the coastal walk. Finish days off with a spa treatment or head to the local pub for a drink and modern Australian meal.

Only stayed the one night but Lady Bay Resort was excellent and the four of us all agreed that it would be an ideal location to base yourself if you were spending some time in the Warrnambool / Great Ocean Road region of western Victoria.

The restaurant was fabulous, a few of us had steak which was huge and one of the best I have had for ages. The staff also were amazing, Jon the manager leading a great team and is hands on which shows.
