The Area: Yeppoon, Central Queensland

Overlooking the crystal waters of the Great Barrier Reef and the Keppel Islands, Yeppoon is the ultimate tropical hideaway and the major town of the Capricorn Coast. The charming seaside town offers a few great bars and restaurants, but it’s the landscape of pristine white sand beaches and lush rainforest that is the real star. With a multitude of activities on offer, it’s the ideal place to get away and relax with the family.

The Capricorn Coast is under the Tropic of Capricorn, for which it is named, and it sweeps along the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can enjoy views of Great and North Keppel Islands and the many smaller islands, which act as stepping-stones to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Great Keppel Island is a popular island for visitors and is accessible by a 30-minute ferry ride. Ferry services operate daily out of Rosslyn Bay. Sailing and cruising options are available from Keppel Bay Marina.

Other attractions include visiting one of the local arts, craft and food markets and sample some local creations, cuddle a koala at the Cooberrie Park Wildlife Sanctuary or explore the mysterious Capricorn Caves by day – or by night for the more adventurous. Lammermoor, Kinka, Mullambin and Kemp beaches, Cooee Bay and the Causeway Lake, all line the Capricorn Coast offering more impressive natural scenery, must-see sites as well as accommodation.

We booked a 3 bedroom apartment which was perfect for 3 adults and 2 children. The apartments are walking distance to the main part of Yeppoon and nearby restaurants. There is a bit of a hill but the view is worth it.

We were arriving quite late after driving from Gladstone in the evening. Reception made it very easy for us to find out key in the safety box and find our room. The view was the best part - especially after arriving after dark and seeing it the next morning. The room was clean and tidy and no complaints! It was in walking distance down to the main drag for dinner but be prepared for the walk up the hill afterwards!
