The Area: Sorrento, VIC
A stretch of windswept beaches, sheer bluffs and wild bushland, the Mornington Peninsula was the site of Victoria’s first European settlement. With these early relics plus fortifications dating back to both World Wars, the area is alive with history and a strong sense of the past. Meanwhile, contemporary art galleries and stylish bars add a chic, modern edge, and the Mediterranean landscape is enhanced by silvery olive groves, vineyards and an emphasis on fresh produce.
Stroll down to the foreshore to spot dolphins, feed pelicans or have a swim, before wandering along the Sorrento-Portsea Artists Trail to see how the coastal views were depicted by some of Australia’s most famous artists. To get a sense of Sorrento’s rich past, check out the array of historical buildings scattered through the village and perhaps visit the Nepean Historical Museum or Collins Settlement Historical Site. Sorrento’s ‘front beach’ is best for swimming and kayaking, while the wild ‘back beach’ is better for surfing.
Elsewhere on the Mornington Peninsula, take a tour from one winery to the next, sampling unique local drops and even indulging in a spot of lunch at one of the cellar door restaurants. Cheese factories and olive groves are also choice places to pick up an artisan product, while a long list of markets present wares like fresh produce, crafts and knick knacks for tourists. For a unique experience visit the Peninsula Hot Springs to bathe in the mineral-enriched warm waters.

The staff were friendly and helpful. A visit to the hotel Spa was an added bonus with reasonably priced treatments, friendly competent staff and great service. The breakfast included was wonderful...

The heading could cover the hotel or the place. Hotel Sorrento was just gorgeous. We stayed in a Heritage Suite (Room 7), perched high with views out over the water. The spot was just magic. The room spacious, comfortable, with a semi-private balcony it really was one of the best stops on this trip...
